A winters day with my first sidecar
New Years Day 1991
This 1966 BMW R60/2 with Ural sidecar was my very first rig. I had been riding it a couple of years when these pictures were taken. Josh and I headed up Swyers Drive on New Years Day. Once the old Indian trail from The Dalles to the pass over Mt.Hood, it hasn't been improved much through the years. We found a layer of ice over red clay with water running between the layers. It was slick! .
Consulting the map, we decide to try to continue on Fir Mountain past the junction with Huskey Road, to where Snakehead Ridge meets the top of Neal Creek Canyon... We could see Mt. Hood from up on the ridge.
We had jeep tracks up to Huskey Road. Even so I was plowing snow with my cylinders!
Past the junction the tracks ran out and the snow got deeper. Eventually I was pushing to much snow with my chassis and we could go no farther. We hogged the rig around until we were facing down hill again and retraced our path back down the mountain.
I stopped at a wide spot overlooking Hood River Valley and took a photo looking down on my home...
Soon enough we were back at the barn.
Even though we weren't able to complete the loop and hook up with Neal Creek Road, it was a most satisfying way to spend a winters afternoon.
